Personally, and as a parent, I have a fundamental belief in the value of ‘play’. In recent years there has been much talk endorsing the value of play, more so since the emersion of electronic gadgets that are being targeted towards younger children. I acknowledge that the gadgets have a place in our young children’s lives now days. However in terms of development in the areas of socialisation, creativity and gross motor skills, nothing beats PLAY. Structured play, or open ended, non structured play…..all play is great, and all leads to a happier, healthier child.
As a mum raising my three beautiful children, I learnt the things I loved and the things I hated about ‘toys’. As a family, we loved games, and we still enjoy family game night – even though my children are now all adults. We loved puzzles and LEGO and craft and books and dolls and empty cardboard boxes and random balls of string and other junk that we used to be creative. I resented batteries and cheap plastic toys and ‘presents’ that lasted for the weekend. My experience has certainly shaped my ideas and beliefs, and is always in the forefront of my mind when I am considering new ideas for our shops.
